Ku Bar

Since moving from its dingy home in Charing Cross Road earlier this year, Ku Bar has only got better. It’s now classy, trendy and sleek, but without being pretentious or arrogant. With three floors of plasma screens, fantastic choons, a funky jukebox, cheap drink offers, cosy sofas, cool deco, special regular nights and oh-so-attractive bar staff, Ku bar is back on the map as one of the most popular gay hang-outs in Central London. So go on, give it a try.

Where Is It?
Quite conveniently located a very short stumble away from Leicester Square tube station. It’s a huge venue right on the corner of Lisle Street and you can’t miss it. You’ll spot it as soon as you walk out of either tube stations.

Address: 30 Lisle Street, Leicester Square, London, WC2H 7BA. 020 7437 4303

Has it Entered The Multimedia Age?
Indeed it has, and it has a very nice and new funky website to go along with the bar relaunch. It has everything you need to know on information on Ku Bar; the staff, photographs from popular nights, info on special nights, Ku Club (located downstairs in the bar), a message board where you can have a bitch, a moan, find friends or a hot date and details and a map on where to find Ku Bar for those who don’t step out of the gay village. Very impressive.

What Can People Expect?
When I walked through the doors, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s nothing like the old venue, but it still holds it’s down to earth, chilled out atmosphere. With three floors, there’s plenty to explore and the new Ku Bar is defiantly worth exploring.

The ground floor has very swish furnishings and tucked away tables and sofas, with plasma screens plastered upon the walls which is handy if you’re waiting for someone and need a distraction.

The basement turns into Ku Club after dark and the top floor, even though it’s small, is very chic darling. With funky furniture, disco balls and cool music flowing through, this is the place to be. It gets rammed at weekends so make sure to get there early. There are also regular DJ’s playing to get the crowds going with a mix of camp, pop, r ’n’ b and dance music.

What About the Deco?
The deco’s very minimalist, but this works well and the Ku Bar pulls it off like a fine wine. There are cosy booths, sofas, cool stools and tables and chairs for you to make yourself comfortable. So whether you’re on a date or meeting a friend for a few drinks, you’ll never feel uncomfortable.

Ku Bar could even be mistaken for a straight bar (yes, it really is that classy), if it wasn’t for all of the, *ahem*, gay boys in the place.

What Are the Punters Like?
The venue still gets its regulars, and the most popular customers are the same as before it moved venues; twenty-something camp gay men. However, businessmen do tend to pop in for a drink or two after work, as it’s in such a brilliant location and you can chill out with a newspaper or magazine over a pint and not feel like a pratt.

Ladies are welcome here (especially on a Tuesday night, read on further to discover more), but men are the most popular punters. However, everyone always pays Ku Bar a visit to have fun, to chill out and to meet new faces. Anyone and everyone are welcome at Ku.

What About the Talent?
This is a great place for cruising. With three floors of fun and frolics, you’re bound to find something, or someone, to tickle your fancy. As previously said, blokes are the more popular customers and do tend to frequent more at the weekends, but now with the bars new ‘Ruby Tuesdays’, where ladies are welcome with male guests, this could all change.

So girls and guys, make sure you pop a mint and get scrubbed up before you visit, as you never know who you’re going to meet.

What Should I Wear?
Unlike the old Ku Bar, anything does not go. You could probably get away with strutting in wearing your tattiest clothing, but you may feel a tad under-dressed if you do. Make the effort, but nothing too OTT.

What About the Booze?
Stash your pennies to one side as from Sunday to Thursday most drinks are only £1.50. Bargain! Which, for the location (with the exception of Wetherspoons), this is excellent value for moola. At weekends, you’re looking at around £3 for a pint of Fosters, which is average for such a central venue. The bar stocks most drinks from spirits and bottled beers to alcopops.

Anything Else I Should Know?
Phew, where to start!

Ku Bar is certainly trying to impress with their array of special nights and they’re defiantly not disappointing. Karaoke is on Mondays from 9pm where you’ll see the gorgeous Mr Danyl Johnson hosting; Tuesdays is ladies’ night; Thursday is Free Film Thursday - where, as the name suggests, the venue put on a film for free in the bar (see silklondon.com for more info) and DJs man the decks if cinema going is not your cup of tea. On Friday nights the party really gets started with the basement opening at 8pm until 3am, with free entry before 11pm, or £3 after. Still a bargain in my book.

Fridays also usually see the night in with the latest pop and r ‘n’ b tunes. Saturday sees dance floor fillers putting punters to the test and Sundays play host to The Gay Tea Dance, where free drinks are offered to the first 100 customers. Hosted by Dusty O, you’ll be introduced to the most stylish disco on a Sunday in town. With tunes from Dusty and Prince Nelly with pop, dance and chart sounds from 7pm, make sure you get there before 9pm to avoid any queuing. So what are you waiting for? Grab your mates and get yourself down to Ku Bar!
