Up front label Gung-Ho! is back with a solid release from New Zealand born/London based über-producer Luke Walker.
Fitting in with Gung-Ho!’s ethos of catapulting burgeoning talent into the consciousness of music lovers throughout the land, it lend its love this time around to Luke’s latest stellar studio efforts – ‘Find Your Way’/‘Love Not Lost’.
We caught up with Luke to talk about cutting edge music and "deep-end" experiences.
How did you first get into DJ-ing?
I started off producing but always wanted to DJ as well. I wanted to get to play my tracks out and see people's reactions - I've always loved sharing music. I was hugely inspired by guys in New Zealand like Greg Churchill and Dick Johnson who were playing really cutting edge music. It really blew my mind.
What was that first set like?
Nerve-wracking! It was supporting Aquasky, so not your average first set! It was a bit of a baptism of fire, but "deep-end" experiences like that make you a much better DJ, I think.
You've DJ-ed all around the world – what have been some of the most memorable nights?
I put on a party in Niseko, Japan, which was crazy. It's a seasonal ski town in the far north of Hokkaido. It was so packed with crazy Japanese people and tourists that the place was dripping with sweat - and it was below freezing outside! There was just an awesome energy there that night - the Japanese love their electro and techno!
Playing in Barcelona was a great experience as well, and I loved all the release parties I'd had in New Zealand. We've always got fantastic, up for it crowds with no attitude, which is what it's all about.
Ever had a disaster?
Definitely! I thought moving away from vinyl would help as it mainly used to be needles and decks jumping, but I've still had CDs stop right in the middle of tracks, which sucks! You have to laugh it off and not let it affect you.
"Gay clubs have always got huge amounts of energy and everyone is there to dance, so they're a lot of fun to play at."
What's the most outrageous thing anyone's ever done or said to you while you've been in the DJ box?
I wish I could say something more, but it's generally after I've finished playing that I've had loved up girls saying some fairly naughty things. I can't complain about that!
A good night out is…
A quality, varied music selection, a wicked sound system, friendly people who don't just want to hear hits, and a lot of Jagermeister and beer!
Do you ever go to gay clubs?
I snuck into a Hero party which was a big annual gay party in New Zealand when I was younger to see Crazy P play. They always had wicked line ups! Gay clubs have always got huge amounts of energy and everyone is there to dance, so they're a lot of fun to play at.
How did you first get into producing?
I ended up with a PC with very basic production software on it when I was 15 years old. I started playing around and got the bug in the big way. I did a couple of courses, got myself a production setup and I was underway. I just had this huge desire to create the music that I could hear in my head. I played the piano when I was a kid, which helped a lot too.
What's the new release, 'Find Your Way', like?
It's a bit more spaced out and techno influenced than my earlier stuff, which was more straight up electro house. It's a bit more trippy, but still very much a big room dancefloor tune. I'm still not sick of it after hearing it heaps of times, but I may just have bad taste!
"Distortion and melody can work together."
Describe 'Love Not Lost' for us.
It's a rockier electro sound but has quite a quite euphoric breakdown in the middle, which gives it a nice balance, I reckon. Distortion and melody can work together.
Are you a glass half full or half empty kind of person?
Definitely glass half full.
What's next for you?
I've been traveling for six months through Asia but have now settled into London and got my production setup sorted, so I'll be putting my head down over winter to make some new tracks. I'm starting to put parties on in London and I'm back in New Zealand in February to play some gigs, which I can't wait for.
