The drag king competition that saw attendees from around the country is back for part two, hosted by last year’s winner – Stevie Wonderful.
Stevie, aka Fiona King, was a first time drag king when Fiona pasted on facial hair, added a dashiki and crooned Stevie's way to the crown. Following the win, Stevie took his vocal talents on tour, performing at UK Black Pride in London, the York Lesbian Arts Festival in the City of York and Rock ‘n’ Doris in Newcastle upon Tyne.
By the end of the evening, one lucky person will take over from Stevie to hold the title of King of the Castle 2009. And don’t forget the Dirty Rascal award for one brave audience member!
We caught up with Stevie, aka Fiona, to find out more…
So what was it that made you win last year’s King of the Castle?
I've been told it was my performance of 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours'. There's a video of it on YouTube and, although the sound quality isn't brilliant, the audience are screaming throughout and go completely wild at the end of my performance, so I guess it must have gone down well!
Was the competition stiff?
Yes, all the other acts were really good and brought something unique to the show. An actor friend of mine entered the competition as Otis Blue and I really thought she was going to win - her character was perfect, right down to the very last detail. It was a complete shock when my name was announced as the winner.
Where did the idea for Stevie Wonderful first come from?
I dressed up as Stevie Wonder for an 80s fancy dress party. I love Stevie's music and so my character Stevie Wonderful developed from there.
"I hope the winner's trophy isn't bigger than the one I got last year!"
What advice do you have for this year’s contestants?
Stay in character throughout the whole competition, even when you're not on stage. The judges' eyes are everywhere. Check out www.dauphines.co.uk for a product called Kryolan Stipple Wax - it's the best thing I've found for putting facial hair on and it washes off with soap and water. Lastly, have fun! Try not to let your nerves get in the way of having a good time.
What format will this year’s competition take?
This year's theme is 'Return of the King', but the format is the same as last year. There'll be three heats - evening/clubwear, sleep/swimwear and a performance. I'll be hosting this year's competition, so expect a few songs from yours truly.
What prizes are up for grabs?
Too many to mention! I hope the winner's trophy isn't bigger than the one I got last year! Seriously though, there are fantastic prizes for everyone who enters - even the dirty rascal!
We hear there’s a party at the end of the night? Tell us more…
KOTC doesn't end after the competition - that's when the party really gets started. There're some excellent DJs on the line up and I'll be boogying till the early hours, so looking forward to seeing you all on the dancefloor.
Anything to add?
I hope there're lots of contestants this year. If you are thinking of entering the competition, don't hesitate for a minute. You'll have a fantastic time and you never know - you could get crowned KOTC Winner 2009. Stevie Wonderful is wishing you all the best of luck on the night!
King of the Castle will be held on Sunday 24 May 2009 at 7.30pm at Cape Bar, 10 Aldermanbury, London, EC2V 7JQ.
