Terry Vietheer is an Aussie DJ and up and coming producer now living in London. With string of prestigious residencies across some of London’s best gay clubs, we caught up with Terry to find out how it all began.

How did you get into DJing?
Back in 2002, my employer gave me a bonus with the direction to start saving for a house. There was no way I was going to tie myself down and I thought it was time to follow my passion. I had been going to dance parties and raves since I was 16 and wanted to know what it was like on the other side of the decks.

What was your first gig?
Back home in Sydney, two of my favourite DJs - Sista P and Mike Kelly, co-founder of Sorry Shoes Records - started a new night called Downtown and wanted bring on some new blood. Opening night they had four of us playing a one hour set each. Defiantly a moment I won't forget.

How would you describe your sound?
From a production point, I would say progressive house. Last year I released a track with Per QX on Roger Sanchez's label Stealth Records and later this summer I have a track coming out with Chris Cooper on Miles Dyson's label Plasmapool Records. When it comes to DJing, it all depends on the party. For example, my sets at Lovechild will be different to the ones I play at Shoreditch House. Also the gigs I play abroad with JumpDJ are less vocal than the sets I play here in London.

What do you listen to when not DJing?
Currently on my iPod are Cut Copy, Delphic, Fleetwood Mac, Jamie Lidell, Phoenix, Prince, Radiohead and Sia to name a few. I think it is really important to listen to different sounds, old and new, and learn from them.

Where can we catch you playing at the moment?
I have been resident at Heaven's Popcorn now for two year which I love. There is not another club in the world on a Monday night like it, apart from maybe Pacha Ibiza during the summer season. I also play at Barcode, Fire and Shadow Lounge.

Ever had any DJing disasters?
Umm... yes. Mostly back in Australia and involving tequila. I try my best not to drink on the job anymore.

In your opinion, which are the hottest night spots and events in the capital at the moment?
T
here are so many from Cable to Fire, Ministry of Sound to Barcode. Still my favourite club is Heaven. It was the first club I went to here in London back in 2000 and I was totally blown away. I love how the venue has changed through the years and is multipurpose as a live venue too. I saw Robyn there last month which was amazing. I also think the festivals in the capital are great too. The last two wireless festivals have been great and this month's Lovebox is going to be very special.

Which production artists and DJs do you respect?
My idol is Carl Cox. He still rocks it after all these years! I am also into Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke, ATFC, Hagenaar & Albrecht, TV Rock and Fedde Le Grand. These guys always have fun behind to decks and I am a firm believer in loving what you do.

What would be your dream gig?
WMC in Miami. This year’s line up was outstanding! Hoping to get there next year to party and would be amazing to play one year after I get some more production under my sleeve.

Do you think there is much difference between the Sydney scene and London scene?
Definitely. I was naive when I moved to London over two years ago thinking it would be the same as the Sydney scene. Yes we have a muscles, twinks, bears, etc down under however it is on a much smaller scale. There are only a couple of promoters between a handful of clubs and everyone knows everyone. One of the great things about London is you can go out and meet new people.
